UNION TO BALLOT GALWAY AVIVA STAFF ON INDUSTRIAL ACTION
Date Published: 20-Oct-2011
Unite trade Union is to ballot Aviva staff in Galway on industrial action.
Representatives from the union are meeting with the 200 staff at the Knocknacarra call centre at 5 0 ‘ clock this evening.
The decision to ballot was taken at an Aviva staff meeting in Dublin last night.
It followed yesterday’s announcement that the Insurance company was to make 950 people redundant across its Irish operations.
The company employs over 2000 staff in Galway, Dublin and Cork.
No jobs will be lost before March 2012 and the full implementation of the redundancy programme could take up to two years.
AVIVA has confirmed that it hopes to achieve as many of the potential redundancies through voluntary means.
Brian Gallagher of the Unite Trade Union told Galway Bay FM that Aviva staff have decided to go on strike – if management aren’t willing to engage in talks on ways to save as many jobs as possible.
