TUAM TOWN COUNCIL TO MEET JOBS MINISTER

Date Published: 14-Jun-2012

Members of Tuam Town Council and the local business community are set to meet with Jobs Minister, Richard Bruton, to discuss the unemployment situation in the town.

This follows a proposal at a previous meeting by Councillor Sally-Anne Flanagan.

Councillor Larry Bane told the meeting that in his opinion the I.D.A had done nothing for Tuam and wondered how many times they had brought potential employers to see the unoccupied business park in the town.

Councillor Pat O’ Hora supported the call for a deputation saying that the I.D.A. annoyed him as they never pushed Tuam which had the best educated young people in the country, he believed.

Galway East TD, Paul Connaughton jnr., informed members of Tuam Town Council that he had organised a deputation to meet with the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, within the next few weeks.

While, Deputy Micheál Kitt, said that unemployment figures showed that there were over 2,000 people in the Tuam area who were out of work and this was bigger than in any other town in the county.

Mr. Frank Gilmore, Director of Services said that Tuam had been the recipient of a €30 million investment in water and sewerage and soon would have high speed broadband and improved accessibility when the Gort to Tuam motorway was built and this improved infrastructure will be very attractive for major employers.
