TRIBUTES PAID TO THE LATE LORD HEMPHILL

The death has taken place of Lord Hemphill of Kiltulla Athenry and formerly of Tulira Castle in Ardrahan

The 83 year old who was an influential figure in horse racing, breeding and hunting died in hospital yesterday after being ill for a few weeks

His full name was Peter Patrick Ftizroy Martyn Hemphill, with Martyn being added by deed poll in 1959

It was the maiden name of his paternal grandmother who was a cousin of Edward Martyn, whose home was Tulira Castle

Listed as one of the largest landowners in Galway Lord Hemphill was educated at Downside in the UK but spent a large part of his childhood at Tulira Castle

Today local cllr Michael Fahy said Lord Hemphill had kept in touch with the area and South Galway had lost a great ambassador in word and deed

Lord Hemphill was a member of the Turf Club and a former senior steward, he served as Master of the Galway Blazers from 1957 until the mid 1980s and was conferred with the Cross of Order of Merit, Order of Malta for promoting Christian values

However he is best known in Galway for his service to the Galway races committee, which he chaired for a period of 12 years

The current chairman Tim Naughton said that Lord Hemphill had a real passion for horse racing and was an enthusiastic, progressive and committed member of the committee who would be missed

Galway racecourse manager John Maloney said Lord Hemphill never had a bad word to say about anyone

Galway has country’s largest population of young people

Galway has a population of young people which is more than twice the national average.

According to information gathered by the Central Statistics Office, Galway’s population of 20 to 24 year olds is more than twice the national average.

The number of 25-34 year olds in Galway is also more than the norm nationally, with the two main colleges thought to be the main reason.

However immigration in Galway is much higher than in other areas at 19.4 percent, compared to the national average of 12 percent.

Call for direct donations to city charity shops

A city councillor is encouraging people to donate goods directly to charity shops.

It follows allegations of thefts from clothes banks in Galway and across the country in recent months.

However, cameras are in place at some clothes banks and surveillance is carried out by local authorities.

Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Neil McNeilis said the problem of theft from clothes banks is widespread.

Galway ‘Park and Ride’ could become permanent

A park ‘n’ ride scheme from Carnmore into Galway city could become a permanent service if there is public demand.

That’s according to the Chief Executive of Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle.

The pilot scheme will begin at 7.20 next Monday morning, May 13th.

Motorists will be able to park cars at the airport carpark in Carnmore and avail of a bus transfer to Forster Street in the city.

Buses will depart every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes at offpeak times throughout the day, at a cost of 2 euro per journey.
