Teenage maths genius offers to teach entire Leaving Cert course in one day

A teenage academic genius who hit the headlines last year when he auctioned his school notes is now planning to teach the entire Leaving Cert Maths course to students … in just one day.
Cillian Fahy, a former student at Gort Community School, is planning a free one-day revision course for Higher Level Maths students at the end of this month.
“The course is designed to prepare students directly for the exam. Its aim is to allow students to take everything they have learnt in class and learn what that really means for their exam.
“The course will be run entirely by me. And I will offer a fresh outlook on the Maths exam which has been recently tested. It will run from 9am until 5.30pm and in that time we will try and cram in the entire Maths syllabus,” said Cillian, who scored seven As in his own Leaving Cert.
He has teamed up with Engineers Ireland in Dublin for the course (which is open to 130 students).
“Engineers Ireland offer free Maths classes on their website and that’s something I really support. So I was really happy to organise this free course with them to help students with higher level Maths, the most difficult Leaving Cert subject. You can find more information on steps.ie,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cillian is also planning summer courses in Galway and elsewhere around the country in August to prepare students for Leaving Cert 2013, although these will cost €100 per person.
“The free course is also connected to a similar summer course I will be running in August. That will take place in Galway on the 13th and 14th, and also in Cork and Dublin.
“That course aims to cover the entire new Maths syllabus and is aimed at students just going into their final Leaving Cert year. It will offer them the chance to see the new ‘Project Maths’ syllabus in its entirety and get a step ahead before the year starts,” he said.
At the end of last year, Cillian auctioned his Leaving Cert notes for almost €3,000, which he used to cover his registration fee for Trinity College.

Galway has a population of young people which is more than twice the national average.
According to information gathered by the Central Statistics Office, Galway’s population of 20 to 24 year olds is more than twice the national average.
The number of 25-34 year olds in Galway is also more than the norm nationally, with the two main colleges thought to be the main reason.
However immigration in Galway is much higher than in other areas at 19.4 percent, compared to the national average of 12 percent.

A city councillor is encouraging people to donate goods directly to charity shops.
It follows allegations of thefts from clothes banks in Galway and across the country in recent months.
However, cameras are in place at some clothes banks and surveillance is carried out by local authorities.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Neil McNeilis said the problem of theft from clothes banks is widespread.

A park ‘n’ ride scheme from Carnmore into Galway city could become a permanent service if there is public demand.
That’s according to the Chief Executive of Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle.
The pilot scheme will begin at 7.20 next Monday morning, May 13th.
Motorists will be able to park cars at the airport carpark in Carnmore and avail of a bus transfer to Forster Street in the city.
Buses will depart every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes at offpeak times throughout the day, at a cost of 2 euro per journey.
