RESIDENTS AVERT BLOCKADE OF M6 MOTORWAY
Date Published: 20-Apr-2009
Residents along a section of the M6 have averted a blockade of the road following negotiations between council officials.
Residents from Caherbriscaun, which is between Oranmore and Athenry, threatened the action this afternoon over the construction of an embankment along a local road.
They say the embankment is closer to local houses than agreed upon in the original design of the M6 motorway.
This afternoon, residents threatened to blockade a section of the road if construction workers did not make changes to the position of the embankment.
Galway County Council Project manager Ciaran Wyn has now agreed to discuss proposals for a redesign of the local road, and a decision is due this week.
Galway East Deputy Frank Fahey was in Caherbriscaun this afternoon and said there was a lot of anger over the embankment.
Meanwhile, Deputy Fahey has announced that the Ballinasloe/ Athlone section of the motorway could be completed by July.
The Fine Fail TD says that when it’s completed motorists will be able to travel on motorway all the way from Ballinasloe to the Leixlip bypass on the approach to Dublin.
