Red-faced Garda no longer tall in the saddle

Regular cyclists in Galway know that if your bicycle isn’t chained or locked to an immovable object, chances are it won’t be there when you return.

The Gardaí, through their website and other media, regularly remind cyclists about commonsense bicycle security – but now it appears even Galway Gardaí aren’t immune from the city’s bicycle thieves.

During a clean-up of the Ballinfoile, Ballindooley and Castlegar areas of the city at the weekend, volunteers discovered an almost brand new Garda bicycle dumped in undergrowth.

It is understood the Garda bike was stolen several weeks ago but it is not yet known whether it was taken from Galway Garda station or at a location in the city from an unsuspecting Garda out on the beat.

An investigation is ongoing into the theft.

The bike was stripped of its two tyres and handlebars and then ditched in bushes next to the Ballinfoile Mór Community Organic Garden beside the Lus Léanna estate on the Headford Road.

Details surrounding the circumstances of the theft – exactly where it was taken from and when – have not yet been established. “It is under investigation,” the spokesperson said.
