Around the World, an exhibition offering an intimate look at the attraction between male and female is being opened by Irish playwright and novelist Eugene McCabe this week in The Painter’s Palette Gallery, Moycullen. The show by Cork artist Maria Magee runs from this Friday June 3 to Monday, June 6, with the opening this Thursday at 7.30pm.

“Three years ago I started to figuratively explore the theme of attraction between male and female,” says Maria. “This body of work is the result. Now I realise that while I was working at capturing the power of attraction, I was also trying to find balance in the male and female energies. I am very pleased with the result of these explorations.”

One of the paintings in the exhibition was used on the cover of Eugene’s most recent publication – a novella entitled The Love of Sisters.

“I am very proud that one of these paintings is in print on the cover of one of Eugene’s books. He is honouring me again by opening this exhibition,” said Maria, adding that Eugene is a family friend and explaining how it happened.

“Lynda Cookson [owner of the Painters’ Palette] wrote an article about me a few years ago and featured some paintings in the article which Eugene saw. He was struck by how they could be appropriate for the cover of a book he was writing.”

There are 15 pieces in total in Maria’s exhibition, and this will be the first time that the entire body of work will be on show at once.

“It’s very different to look at the image one at a time in a folder and then to see the entire collection on show up there collectively, to see the progression, the links, it certainly has an impact. Anyone who has seen the paintings in the studio have realised they are quite personal, quite emotional and certainly strike at something within people.”

Lynda Cookson is delighted to host the exhibition opening.

“It’s a very different collection, it has meaning – it’s not just decorative. Its hugely important for Irish artists to be given space to portray their work. As a South African who came to Ireland as an artist, there certainly is a great tradition and emphasis on music and theatre but not so much on the visual side of artistry. With the downturn in the economy many galleries have shut down leaving less space for artists to show their work. It’s imperative that Irish be supported.”

The exhibition runs until June 6 in The Painters Palette, Moycullen village.
