OLBC side take the honours at annual Salthill Devon 5s

When the Carlsberg National Fives kicked off early on Saturday morning, more than 100 with names like Intelligent Monkies, Lame Ducks, Pornstars Super Injunctions and Geratric Turkeys all had ambitions of winning the 35th running of the event.
However just after six o’clock on Sunday evening, Big O Taxi’s were crowned champions as the OLBC backboned side held off the challenge of the Mervue-based Better Bettors by 2-1 in the final.
Played in front of a huge crowd at the splendid amphitheatre that is Salthill Park, the winners were generally in command throughout and stunning long range strikes in each half by Geoffrey Power had them ahead before Eamonn Feeney pulled one back for the losers in the closing minutes.
Galway minor star Shane Maughan was their leading goal scorer as he notched eight throughout the campaign, while Ronan Caldwell also contributed hugely in the scoring stakes. Power was rewarded for his prowess with the goal of the tournament award.
For Better Bettors it was a bitter pill to swallow as they were going down in the final for the second year in succession and indeed such is their consistency that it was the third time they had got the last four.
However one of their charges was rewarded when Derek McWalter was selected as the Player of the Tournament by the Fives special guest Seamus McGettigan, himself a winner in 1981. He was presented with the Diarmuid Fadden memorial medal.
The Ray Healy memorial ‘Fair Play’ award selected by the referees went to beaten semi-finalists ECO Car Wash.

As part the 35th running of the event, Salthill Devon included an Over 35 section in the Fives for the first time and after a lot of energy was expanded Cregmore were crowned champions following a 2-1 win over Kelly’s Heroes (Salthill Devon).
Pete Kelly was most unfortunate to head home an own goal for the opener and it was Padraig Brennan who got the second for Cregmore, but the biggest cheer of the day was still to come when the long serving Devon clubman drilled home a cracker after being set up by Shane O’Doherty.

Galway has a population of young people which is more than twice the national average.
According to information gathered by the Central Statistics Office, Galway’s population of 20 to 24 year olds is more than twice the national average.
The number of 25-34 year olds in Galway is also more than the norm nationally, with the two main colleges thought to be the main reason.
However immigration in Galway is much higher than in other areas at 19.4 percent, compared to the national average of 12 percent.

A city councillor is encouraging people to donate goods directly to charity shops.
It follows allegations of thefts from clothes banks in Galway and across the country in recent months.
However, cameras are in place at some clothes banks and surveillance is carried out by local authorities.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Neil McNeilis said the problem of theft from clothes banks is widespread.

A park ‘n’ ride scheme from Carnmore into Galway city could become a permanent service if there is public demand.
That’s according to the Chief Executive of Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle.
The pilot scheme will begin at 7.20 next Monday morning, May 13th.
Motorists will be able to park cars at the airport carpark in Carnmore and avail of a bus transfer to Forster Street in the city.
Buses will depart every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes at offpeak times throughout the day, at a cost of 2 euro per journey.
