Night of American roots music in Monroe’s
Date Published: 05-May-2011
Fans of old-time American music are in for a treat when Oregon outfit, the Foghorn Trio perform at the Backstage Bar in Monroe’s on Wednesday, May 11.
The Foghorn trio is made up of Stephen ‘Sammy’ Lind and Caleb Klauder – who are founding members of this distinctive string band – and Quebec born Nadine Landry. Alternating between fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo and upright bass they perform traditional music with respect and energy.
The Foghorn Trio is one incarnation of the original Foghorn Sting Band, a five-piece outfit. They play music that could be coming from a console radio in a 1930s living room, or an Appalachian front porch; instead it’s being delivered by a group of players from the thriving old time music scene of Portland.
The trio have just released a new studio recording, Sud de la Louisiane, a mix of original and songs from The Carter Family, Kitty Wells and Doc Watson amongst others. On it, the musicians blend voices, repertoire and instruments to create a diverse performance true to the roots of American music, with old-time, country, Cajun, and vintage sounding originals, written by Caleb Klauder.
In concert, the Foghorns play in unison, gathered around a single mic, with no flashy picking or solos, carried along by their rhythms and by a determination to keep traditional American music alive and exciting.
Tickets for their gig in Monroe’s Backstage Bar are €6 and the performance starts at 8.30pm. To book, or for more information, log onto www.monroes.ie or phone 086-8839100.
