New high-tech city traffic control centre in pipeline
Date Published: 09-Jun-2011
BY ENDA CUNNINGHAM
An announcement is expected next Monday on funding for a high-tech new traffic management, CCTV and city-wide electronic messaging system, the Galway City Tribune has learned.
The system, which will cost €250,000, could be in place by the end of the year, and the head of transportation for the city has promised it would make a “huge” difference to traffic flow in the city.
As well as relaying live images from around 20 signalised junctions around the city, the system will allow traffic controllers alter traffic light sequences at the flick of a switch to alleviate backlogs, and will provide live information on traffic jams and carparking spaces for motorists.
The Galway City Tribune understands that an announcement is due on Monday on whether €250,000 in funding will be provided for the scheme.
It will see the establishment of a Central Control Room which can change the flow of traffic as the need arises.
All of the lights will be linked in sequence to ensure traffic flows inbound smoothly in the morning and outbound in the evenings – a traffic controller will be able to override red lights to ensure a clear ‘green run’. The control room will be manned initially from 7.30am to 7.30pm.
