MIDWIFE CALLED TO GIVE EVIDENCE AT SAVITA INQUEST
Date Published: 09-Apr-2013
A midwife has been called to give evidence at Savita Halappanavar’s inquest over an alleged comment that her pregnancy could not be terminated because ‘it was a Catholic thing’.
A friend of the 31 year old dentist has given evidence that she was present at Galway University Hospital when the remark was made
Lawyers for the hospital say they are not obliged to hand over the work roster but after a short adjournment they said the "best guess" was that the woman was clinical midwife managerAnn Maria Burke, who’s statement makes no reference to the remark
Today’s session has also heard that a modified obstetric early warning score system was not in place for Savita’s admission last October.
The system known as MOEWS was introduced at UHG the following month and remains in operation today.
The inquest has now broken for lunch and resumes at 2.
It heard that in July 2012 Galway University Hospital had agreed a policy on the management of sepsis.
The policy was prepared by the management team of the Department of Obstetrics.
