LOCAL MAN IES IN SPIDDAL CRASH

A man from the Spiddal area has died following a road traffic collision near the village in the early hours of today.
The incident happened at approximately 1 am this morning when the man, who is in his 30s, was walking at Salahoona when he was struck by a car travelling on the R336.
The body of the local man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was taken to University Hospital, Galway where a Post Mortem examination is expected to be carried out later today.
The driver of the car, was trauamatised but uninjured in the incident.
Gardai at Salthill and Spiddal have been investigating the incident and the road on the West side of Spiddal village has been closed since shortly after the incident.
Traffic has been disrupted in the area and vehicles are being diverted at Spiddal village and at Casla while a forensic examination of the scene is carried out.
The Gardai at Salthill have confirmed to Galway Bay Fm that they hope to reopen the R336 sometime after 10.30 this morning.
The early morning Bus eireann service from Carraroe was also disrupted following the incident but a Bus Eireann spokesperson says that they hope services on this route may be back to normal by 11 am.
The name of the Spiddal man who died in the incident is not being released until all his next of kin have been informed.

Galway has country’s largest population of young people

Galway has a population of young people which is more than twice the national average.
According to information gathered by the Central Statistics Office, Galway’s population of 20 to 24 year olds is more than twice the national average.
The number of 25-34 year olds in Galway is also more than the norm nationally, with the two main colleges thought to be the main reason.
However immigration in Galway is much higher than in other areas at 19.4 percent, compared to the national average of 12 percent.

Call for direct donations to city charity shops

A city councillor is encouraging people to donate goods directly to charity shops.
It follows allegations of thefts from clothes banks in Galway and across the country in recent months.
However, cameras are in place at some clothes banks and surveillance is carried out by local authorities.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Neil McNeilis said the problem of theft from clothes banks is widespread.

Galway ‘Park and Ride’ could become permanent

A park ‘n’ ride scheme from Carnmore into Galway city could become a permanent service if there is public demand.
That’s according to the Chief Executive of Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle.
The pilot scheme will begin at 7.20 next Monday morning, May 13th.
Motorists will be able to park cars at the airport carpark in Carnmore and avail of a bus transfer to Forster Street in the city.
Buses will depart every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes at offpeak times throughout the day, at a cost of 2 euro per journey.
