Date Published: 16-Apr-2013

Crime is down in the county according to the latest statistics from Gardaí.

At a meeting of the County Joint Policing Committee, it was revealed that recorded crime is down 46 percent since the start of the year.

While rural burglary is down almost 30 percent, theft from shops is up significantly, with a 70 percent rise.

There is an almost 60 percent decrease in fatal road crashes in the same period and 61 incidents of drink driving were detected.

639 mandatory alcohol test checkpoints were carried out with more than 3,600 breath tests performed.

Public order offences are down by almost half and assaults causing harm are down by almost a quarter.

Meanwhile, Gardaí seized almost more than 80 thousand euro worth of drugs in the county, excluding the city and Salthill between January and the end of March.

Speaking to Galway Bay fm News, Superintendent of Galway Garda Division, Marie Skehill says that the dramatic jump in thefts from shops could be as a result of a push get retailers to report small crime.
