LANDLADY TO APPEAL DECISION AWARDING DAMAGES TO GALWAY STUDENTS
Date Published: 08-Mar-2013
A former landlady who put a group of student tenants, from Galway and other counties, under electronic surveillance, has asked for more time to lodge an appeal against a Circuit Court judgement against her.
In 2007, Rita McKenna and her daughter Edel were ordered to pay damages of more than 115 thousand euro to the students for invasion of privacy.
It related to a property at 46 Mobhi Road, Glasnevin Dublin
The tenants from Galway, Mayo, Donegal, Armagh and Monaghan rented the property at Glasnevin in 2003 and 2004.
They suspected that their conversations were being monitored when the landlady referred to details of a conversation the students had in private.
A Circuit Court judge ruled that the students’ right to privacy was infringed and awarded damages.
Following the Circuit Court ruling, a judgement mortgage was registered against the Glasnevin property to secure payment of damages.
In the High Court yesterday, Rita McKenna asked for more time to lodge an appeal to the 2007 Circuit Court order.
According to today’s Irish Times, Master Edmund Honohan adjourned the application to next month.
