GARDAI SAY INISHBOFIN DEATHS NOT SUSPICIOUS
Date Published: 11-Oct-2010
Gardaí say they are not treating as suspicious the deaths of two men in a boating accident in Inishbofin.
The bodies of former Mayo footballer Ger Feeney and businessman Donal McEllin – who were both from Castlebar in Co. Mayo – were found yesterday morning.
The two men had travelled from Rosmoney in Westport to the Island of Inishbofin by cruiser on saturday, and spent several hours socialising on the Island that night.
It’s thought the two men got into difficulty while using a dinghy to get back to their motor cruiser which was anchored off the island.
Speaking on the Keith Finnegan show, Superintendent Tony O Donnell of Clifden Garda station says they are still attempting to clarify how the men died.
63 year old Ger McEllin, a single man and owner of the motor cruiser was influential in developing Castlebar airport.
His friend 55 year old Ger Feeney, played for over a decade with the Mayo senior team.
Former Mayo football manager and Fine Gael TD John O’ Mahony knew both men and says they will be fondly remembered.
