GALWAY UNEMPLOYMENT RATE BEGINS TO STABILISE

The rate of unemployment across Galway appears to be stabilising.
The number of people on the live register across the city and county dropped slightly at the end of 2012 compared to 2011.
At the end of 2012, 22 thousand and 81 people were registered unemployed in Galway – that’s a drop of 504 on the year previous.
However, it’s an increase of 552 compared to November 2012 – the highest increase is recorded in the city with an extra 319 extra people signing on last month.
The city’s number of unemployed now stands at 11,096 that’s a drop of 513 compared to the end of 2011.
In Ballinasloe, the number of people getting dole payments is 2,545 that’s an extra 19 people compared to the end of 2011.
In Clifden, where there was a drop of 50 people on the live register last month compared to the same time the year previous.
There is now 1,291 people registered unemployed in Clifden.
In Gort, the number of unemployed is 1,457 that’s up 16 on the figure at the end of 2011.
To Loughrea, and the number of unemployed increased slightly at 41 people compared to the end of 2011 – there is now 2,396 people getting dole payments in the region.
And finally to Tuam, there was a drop of 17 on the live register number compared to 2011, the number unemployed is now 3,296.

Galway has country’s largest population of young people

Galway has a population of young people which is more than twice the national average.
According to information gathered by the Central Statistics Office, Galway’s population of 20 to 24 year olds is more than twice the national average.
The number of 25-34 year olds in Galway is also more than the norm nationally, with the two main colleges thought to be the main reason.
However immigration in Galway is much higher than in other areas at 19.4 percent, compared to the national average of 12 percent.

Call for direct donations to city charity shops

A city councillor is encouraging people to donate goods directly to charity shops.
It follows allegations of thefts from clothes banks in Galway and across the country in recent months.
However, cameras are in place at some clothes banks and surveillance is carried out by local authorities.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Neil McNeilis said the problem of theft from clothes banks is widespread.

Galway ‘Park and Ride’ could become permanent

A park ‘n’ ride scheme from Carnmore into Galway city could become a permanent service if there is public demand.
That’s according to the Chief Executive of Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle.
The pilot scheme will begin at 7.20 next Monday morning, May 13th.
Motorists will be able to park cars at the airport carpark in Carnmore and avail of a bus transfer to Forster Street in the city.
Buses will depart every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes at offpeak times throughout the day, at a cost of 2 euro per journey.
