Date Published: 14-Sep-2012
A new cycle way which will run from Galway to Dublin is expected to bring millions of euro in revenue every year to towns along the route.
Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar has announced plans to develop a 200 kilometre off road cycle way run from Galway to Maynooth in Dublin, at a cost of around 30 million euro.
While the project aims to follow the success of the Great Western Greenway in Mayo, it will be the only cross-country route in Ireland.
The first leg of the cycle way will run from Mullingar to Maynooth.
4 hundred and 51 thousand euro has already allocated by the department to develop a path along the Royal Canal from Boardstown to the Meath border.
The National roads authority and local authorities have been instructed by the Minister to asses and propose an overall route for the project.
Galway West TD Brian Walsh says this process will be complete in the next 6 months
