Date Published: 05-Feb-2011

FOLLOWING an incident earlier today, in which an articulated lorry crashed into the railway bridge at Lough Athalia, this section of the road remains closed and it may be closed for most of tomorrow as well.

Nobody was injured in the crash at approximately 10 am today, but Gardai say that further structrual examinations of the bridge will have to take place tomorrow.

Gardai at Mill Street say that the road from the Raddison hotel to the Dock Road will not reopen until sometime tomorrow at the earliest

Diversions are in place and the Gardai are urging motorists approaching from the Moneenageshia side to travel via either College Road or Bohermore.

Some rail services to Galway were delayed by the crash at the bridge including the 0730 dublin train which was delayed by 20 minutes and the 09.35 galway to limerick train which was delayed 50 minutes.

But apart from those two services a spokesperson for Iarnrod Eireann says that all their trains, in and out of Galway, have since been operating as normal today.

The crash at the bridge, and the subsequent neccessary road closure, as well as the heavy rain, has contributed to some extra traffic congestion in Galway city today.
