Galway fire services are attempting to control bog and gorse fires fires in East Galway and Connemara this lunchtime.

Gorse fires in the Rosmuc and Invern areas were reported this morning.

Salthill Gardaí say they have been made aware of the situation, but have received no report as to the extent of the fires in either area.

Meanwhile, Fire services are continuing to monitor a smouldering fire in the Mountbellew area that threatened several homes last night.

Mountbellew Gardaí are also monitoring the fire at bogs in the Springlawn/Gurteen area which is still smouldering this lunchtime.

Last evening, fire crews from Mountbellew, Roscommon, and others areas were drafted in to fight the blaze with the help of a Helicopter.

Two houses in the area were saved from the flames, however local Gardaí say the blaze claimed several hectares of forestry that belongs to Coillte.

This is the latest in a series of bog and gorse fires to take place in the Mountbellew area over the past few days.

County Councillor Michael Connolly says he fears the bog fire could re-ignite in the coming days
