FINE GAEL REACTS TO USE OF VOLUNTEERS FOR PARTY POLITICIAL PURPOSES

Date Published: 08-Aug-2012

Fine Gael has moved to clarify the use of volunteers by party members.

It comes as Galway Volunteer Centre has confirmed that Galway Senator Fidelma Healy Eames has liaised with the group in advertising an Office Administrator role and leaflet dropping duties.

A spokesperson for Galway Volunteer Centre says four people volunteered for the office assistant role which was added to their database in early 2009.

No volunteers are recorded, however, as taking up the leaflet dropping role which was advertised with the group in late November last year.

The spokesperson adds that these were the first such advertisements from a Galway politician and such occurrences are generally rare.

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, the GVC adds that it does not select volunteers for any volunteer opportunities and that roles are chosen by the volunteers themselves based on what suits and interests them best.

Meanwhile the Fine Gael party says the "very nature of volunteering is that it is done on a voluntary basis, freely and by choice".

It adds that the majority of volunteers who work with the Fine Gael party are usually either party members or are affiliated in some way to the party or candidate on whose behalf they are volunteering.

The statement concludes that the parliamentary standard allowance is used to fund leaflet distribution, among many other things.

The allowance allocated depends on whether the member opts for the vouched or unvouched system of expenses.
