Festivalmania hits the city

Date Published: 03-May-2011

THOSE who might believe that every festival in this country is effectively a ‘beer festival’ had their eyes opened in Salthill at the weekend when the Oslo hosted ‘Brewers on the Bay’.

Independent brewing companies from all over the country were represented at the Salthill venue for Galway’s only festival which is dedicated to the art of brewing.

Ales and lagers, including Galway’s own Bay Brewery and Galway Hooker, were showcased to visitors to the premises who were able to view how beer is brewed in the Oslo itself at first hand.

It was just one of three festivals to take place in Galway over the May Bank Holiday, as the promenade in Salthill hosted the ‘An Tostal’ festival for the first time since the late 1950s.

The festival, which showcases the best in Irish coastal traditions and culture, featured currach and Galway Hooker races along the coast in Salthill on Saturday and Sunday, with hundreds of spectators watching from the promenade.

Members of the winning currach team from 1955 performed the opening ceremony at noon on Saturday and a fundraising dance for the RNLI took place at the Galway Bay Hotel on Sunday night.

The city centre also played host to the first ‘Coors Light Live at the Latin Quarter’ at the weekend, featuring a variety of free performances from artists such as Cathy Davey, Jape, Donal Dineen, and Converse Allstars in 19 venues.

After the success of the city’s three festivals over the Bank Holiday Weekend, a new event is set to be added to the city’s calendar next month when the first Galway Bike Festival takes place from June 18 to 26.

The festival, which is part of national bike week, is set to take place in a city outside Dublin for the first time with music, fun, games, and lots of bicycles.

Part of the programme of events will include a ‘Family Friendly Mass Cycle’ from Eyre Square to Salthill and back on Saturday, June 18.

Other events will include a teachers’ cycling competition, a ‘critical mass’ cycle through the streets of the city, children’s races in aid of Crumlin Children’sHospital, a treasure hunt, and a ‘Wild West Tour’ of Connemara.
