Drivers to face two tolls on Gort to Tuam motorway

Motorists are likely to face two tolls if a Spanish based company comes on board to construct the much delayed Gort to Tuam motorway – and it is understood that the locations for these have already been identified.
Sources within the National Roads Authority, who almost lost hope of the motorway ever being built, say that their new found interest is insisting on having two tolls on the route as part of the contract.
And it has been learned that one of the tolls will be located at Kiltartan, just north of Gort, while the other will be located in the Ballyglunin area to ‘catch’ motorists travelling from Tuam to Galway.
But Galway West TD Noel Grealish said that this would be “a disaster” as it would result in regular commuters to Galway finding alternative routes to the city rather than having to pay a daily toll.
“There are around 30,000 vehicles using the existing N17 from Tuam to Galway on a daily basis and they are not going to use the new motorway if they are going to be hit with a toll. They will stick to the old road”, Deputy Grealish insisted.
The Gort to Tuam motorway project was thrown a lifeline three weeks ago – a Spanish based consortium approached the National Roads Authority expressing an interest in constructing the 57 kilometre stretch and promised that work could commence by the end of the year.
It is the same building company that built the M6 motorway from Galway to Ballinasloe which was opened in early 2010.

Galway has a population of young people which is more than twice the national average.
According to information gathered by the Central Statistics Office, Galway’s population of 20 to 24 year olds is more than twice the national average.
The number of 25-34 year olds in Galway is also more than the norm nationally, with the two main colleges thought to be the main reason.
However immigration in Galway is much higher than in other areas at 19.4 percent, compared to the national average of 12 percent.

A city councillor is encouraging people to donate goods directly to charity shops.
It follows allegations of thefts from clothes banks in Galway and across the country in recent months.
However, cameras are in place at some clothes banks and surveillance is carried out by local authorities.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Neil McNeilis said the problem of theft from clothes banks is widespread.

A park ‘n’ ride scheme from Carnmore into Galway city could become a permanent service if there is public demand.
That’s according to the Chief Executive of Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle.
The pilot scheme will begin at 7.20 next Monday morning, May 13th.
Motorists will be able to park cars at the airport carpark in Carnmore and avail of a bus transfer to Forster Street in the city.
Buses will depart every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes at offpeak times throughout the day, at a cost of 2 euro per journey.
