Clarinbridge All-Ireland winning management team resign from posts
Date Published: 07-Apr-2011
STEPHEN GLENNON
Just three weeks after Clarinbridge claimed their first ever All-Ireland club senior hurling title at Croke Park, the reigning county champions are looking for a new management team following the resignation of boss Micheál Donoghue and his backroom staff earlier this week.
Clarinbridge boss Donoghue, who captained the club to their first county senior title in 2001 and previously was part of the U-21 management set-up that guided Galway to All-Ireland glory in 2005, had really worked the oracle with the club since taking over two years ago.
In addition to cajoling the ’Bridge to their first county title since 2001 last November – when they accounted for Loughrea after a replay – his charges subsequently defeated Munster champions De La Salle of Waterford and O’Loughlin Gaels of Kilkenny in the All-Ireland semi-final and final respectively.
However, family commitments – coupled with the long hours required to mentor a senior side – have now been cited as the primary reasons behind Donoghue’s decision to stand down from the post, while Tom Helebert, Noel Burke, Tomas Flynn and Conor Lawless have also followed suit.
In the interim, fellow selector Donal Walsh has remained on to supervise the team’s preparations for the upcoming senior hurling championship. Clarinbridge enter the fray in the second round, where they will face Sarsfields in early May.
Confirming that the All-Ireland winning management team has stepped down, Club Secretary Damien McGrath paid tribute to Donoghue and his selectors, thanking them for “their commitment, time and effort”.
“They gave a massive commitment over the last two years,” praised McGrath, who wished them well.
He said the club was currently working on finding a replacement management set-up, adding: “We can’t say anything else on it at the moment.” However, he remained positive that a management team would be put in place in the coming weeks.
With rumours also circulating that some of Clarinbridge’s older brigade may be retiring from the game, McGrath outlined that the club had received no such declarations from these players as of yet.
