CITY HOTELS DOUBLE RATES FOR RACE WEEK
Date Published: 12-Jun-2011
Hotels have already more than doubled their rates for next month’s Galway Races.
That’s despite government claims that holidaying here represents good value.
A standard room on Ladies Day at some of the city’s most popular hotels could cost up to €440.
The Radisson Blu, G Hotel, Park House Hotel, Hotel Meryick and the House Hotel are charging between €310 and €440.
That’s up from an average of €160 a week earlier.
A spokesperson for one of the hotels has defended the rates by saying “hotels are struggling and revenue needs to be generated on popular dates.”
However, the Consumers Association of Ireland has accused the hotels of damaging tourism here by “bleeding customers dry.”
The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar only last month unveiled a one-million-euro promotion urging Irish people to holiday at home.
