CITY COUNCIL SELLS HOUSE DESPITE LONG HOUSING WAITING LIST
Date Published: 09-Oct-2012
Galway city council has to sell one of its houses in Knocknacarra on the open market despite its ever increasing housing waiting list
The property at Fana Burca was the subject of a housing loan from the council and was repossessed
Head of Finance Edel McCormack explained to councillors last night that the only option at the time was for the council to buy the house back and it couldn’t afford it
She also explained that the council won’t incur a loss despite the low price of 90 thousand euro because the former loanees are making agreed repayments
Several councillors were angry at the council selling a house when so many people are waiting for a house
When the sale went to a vote it was tied and Mayor Terry O’Flaherty had to use her casting vote to allow the sale go ahead
Cllr Catherine Connolly who voted against the sale says it’s a shocking indictment on government policy
