City Council gets €600k to tackle water leaks
Date Published: 06-Jun-2011
Funding of €600,000 has been provided to Galway City Council to reduce water loss in the urban area by identifying the exact locations of leaks in the system.
Work on the project, which will cause water outages at locations throughout the city over the next nine months, is to begin in the next fortnight.
The project involves dividing the city network into 80 district metre areas to allow staff at the Terryland Water Works to pin-point the exact locations of leaks in the system.
Work on the water conservation project began last year and the €600,000 in funding announced this week will allow the successful tender, Shareridge Limited, to extend it throughout the city.
“This funding commitment will allow water quantities to be measured at key points around the network,” said Labour TD Derek Nolan, who welcomed the funding.
“The work that will be carried out under the plan will help locate and stop leaks that are costing the Council thousands of euros every year. This is a significant investment and, crucially, it will reduce water bills for hard-pressed businesses.”
The project will allow the City Council to prioritise sections of the network that may need replacement or rehabilitation, while it will also help to identify leaks within premises which could be costing businesses thousands in water charges.
