1st Count City Central: Cubbard elected
ndependent councillor Mike Cubbard has been re-elected to Galway City Council, topping the poll for the second time in a row in the City Central electoral area.
Cllr Cubbard gathered 1,292 first preference votes, exceeding the quota by 148 votes in what was the first count for the Galway City Central.
Elsewhere in City Central, sitting councillor Ollie Crowe (FF) looks set to take the second seat, with 1,008 first preference votes, while new candidate, Eddie Hoare (FG) follows with 854 votes.
Another sitting councillor still in contention Fine Gael’s Frank Fahy (694 votes).
Sinn Féin’s Cllr Mark Lohan looks set to lose his set to lose his seat, polling just 328 first preference votes.
Labour’s John McDonagh, the Social Democrats Sharon Nolan and the Green’s Martina O’Connor are all still in contention with 527, 515 and 544 votes respectively.
Counting has now concluded at the Westside Resource Centre, to recommence at 10am in the morning when the second count of City Central will commence; and the sixth City East count.
Counting for Galway City West is due to get underway tomorrow afternoon.

Galway City Council will have to stump up two-thirds of the cost of erecting the city’s Christmas lights this year because large national and multi-national retailers have refused to cough up.
That’s according to local businessman and councillor Niall McNelis (Lab) who said it was the small family-owned enterprises that were being relied upon to fund the lights – and it wasn’t possible for them alone to fund the almost €70,000 cost of lighting-up the streets and storing the lights when they come down.
“Galway City Council is making a large contribution to lights because a large number of the big chains don’t contribute.
“My understanding is that the City Council is paying 67% of the cost of the lights and the total cost is around €68,000 – that’s to store them too. It’s not just a matter of putting them up; you have to have qualified electricians and be considerate of health and safety,” said Cllr McNelis.
A spokesperson for Galway City Council confirmed to the Galway City Tribune that a request had been made on behalf of the local business groups for an increase in funding for the Christmas lights and an offer had been made.
“Galway City Business Association and a number of other business associations in the city made their concerns known to us and following discussions internally in Galway City Council, there has been an offer made in relation to Christmas lights,” he said.
The spokesperson confirmed that the offer was in the region of €45,000 in grant funding, which represented a 50% increase on the amount provided by the local authority last year.
“Obviously, the City Council wouldn’t see the town stuck coming into the Christmas period. It’s also a hugely significant economic issue in relation to the whole Christmas offering in Galway,” he continued.
Cllr McNelis said this funding from the Council, coupled with the finances raised from businesses in the GCBA, Latin Quarter, East Village, Woodquay Traders’ Association, the Village Salthill and West End Traders would ensure that there was plenty of festive cheer in the city this Christmas.

The final three seats in Galway City Central have been filled – one Fine Gael, one Green Party and one Independent have been deemed elected after the 11th count.
Martina O’Connor’s election doubles the Greens’ representation on Galway City Council, following yesterday’s election of Pauline O’Reilly in City West.

Former mayor Frank Fahy retains his seat, and along with Eddie Hoare, who was elected on the 10th count, keeps Fine Gael’s representation in the electoral area at two seats.
Independent Colette Connolly, who was eighth after the first count, regains the seat she lost in the 2014 local election when she was running for the Labour Party.
She had been co-opted back onto the Council in City West in 2016, when Catherine Connolly, her sister, won a seat in Dáil Éireann.
Mike Cubbard (Ind), who topped the poll for a second election in a row, and Ollie Crowe (FF), were elected yesterday in City Central.
Colette Connolly (Ind) who retained her seat.
A recount was called after the ninth count on Saturday night, when Labour’s John McDonagh was eliminated, trailing the next highest candidate, Martina O’Connor, by eight votes.
Following the recount, McDonagh and O’Connor were tied, but O’Connor was elected as she had a higher first preference vote.
That concludes the counting in the three electoral areas of Galway City Council.
The make-up of the new Council is: 5 Fianna Fáil (Mike Crowe, Ollie Crowe, Alan Cheevers, John Connolly and Peter Keane), 3 Fine Gael (Clodagh Higgins, Frank Fahy and Eddie Hoare), 2 Green Party (Pauline O’Reilly and Martina O’Connor), 1 Social Democrat (Owen Hanley), 1 Labour (Niall McNelis), and 6 Independents (Terry O’Flaherty, Declan McDonnell, Donal Lyons, Mike Cubbard, Noel Larkin, Colette Connolly).
