Date Published: 17-Jan-2013

There are calls for a review of the speed limit on the Monivea Road near the airport and the by-roads that lead off it.

It follows a meeting of the Traffic Joint Policing Sub-Committee where the current 40 kilometre limit past the Briarhill National School was described as "ridiculous".

Chair of the sub-committee Cllr Michael Crowe says people are getting caught and fined needlessly while the roads off it have a limit of 80 kilometres.

Members also discussed the size of signage to indicate the current 50 kilomtre per hour limit on Bothar na dTreabh in the city.

Deputy Eamon O Cuiv said if Gardai went to Bothar na dTreabh, every car would be pulled and speed limits need to be made practical.

He suggested that tertiary roads should all be made 50 kilometres per hour and that this is a national problem.

The Joint Policing Committe is now to write to the County Council to ask that the speed limit on the Monivea Road stretch is reviewed along with the side roads that connect.

Chair of the Traffic sub-committee Cllr Michael Crowe says a fairer speed limit is needed there
