Building in Galway down by half over the last twelve months

The number of new residential and commercial buildings in Galway was slashed in half in 2013, when compared to the previous year, according to new research.

And the vacancy rate for building stock in Galway has remained static at 13%, which is in line with the national average.

The drop is in excess of the national average decrease of 36%.

According to the GeoDirectory database (operated by An Post and Ordnance Survey Ireland), there were 629 new buildings recorded in 2013 in Galway – consisting of 562 residential properties, 50 commercial properties and 17 dual purpose buildings (with both residential and commercial).

That represents a year-on-year drop of 52% and brings the total number of buildings in Galway to 109,485.

The report shows that 80 or roughly 13% of this new commercial and residential stock in Galway are vacant.
