Best of music, song and dance lined up for Clifden trad fest

The second Clifden Traditional Music Festival, a weekend of the very best of Irish music, song and dance, which will take place on the weekend of April 15-17.

Top class visiting musicians from all over the country including Sligo, Fermanagh, Clare, Galway, Leitrim, and Mayo have been invited by Clifden Comhaltas, with a host of All-Ireland champions among them.

The weekend kicks off on Friday, April 15, at 7pm in the Clifden Station House Hotel with the official opening. This will be followed by a concert of local and visiting musicians, singers and dancers with special guest Emma O Sullivan of RTÉ’s All-Ireland Talent Show fame.

On Friday night, there will also be pub music sessions from 10pm in Lowry’s and Vaughan’s Bar.

Saturday starts off at 11am in the Alcock and Brown Hotel with music workshops from champion visiting teachers and a sean-nós dance workshop with local celebrity Emma O’Sullivan. Workshops run until 1pm and the cost is €10 per person, with registration on the day.

These will be followed by a Youth Session in the Alcock and Brown Bar at 1pm. Afternoon music sessions on Saturday will be held from 2-4pm in The Central Bar and 4-6pm in Guys Bar with visiting and local musicians.

At 8pm there will be live music on the outdoor stage on the Square with local and visiting musicians and performers. Special guests include the Emma O Sullivan Dance Troupe and members of the world-renowned dance show, Rhythm of the Dance.

There will be pub music sessions in Lowry’s, Mannion’s and Tom King’s with musicians, singers and dancers.

Sunday starts at 11am with a traditional music Mass in St Joseph’s Church, followed by a farewell session, One for the Road in Foyle’s Hotel at 12.30pm. The traditional festival promises to be a great fun filled weekend of music, song, dance and craic! All are welcome and events are free.

Galway has country’s largest population of young people

Galway has a population of young people which is more than twice the national average.

According to information gathered by the Central Statistics Office, Galway’s population of 20 to 24 year olds is more than twice the national average.

The number of 25-34 year olds in Galway is also more than the norm nationally, with the two main colleges thought to be the main reason.

However immigration in Galway is much higher than in other areas at 19.4 percent, compared to the national average of 12 percent.

Call for direct donations to city charity shops

A city councillor is encouraging people to donate goods directly to charity shops.

It follows allegations of thefts from clothes banks in Galway and across the country in recent months.

However, cameras are in place at some clothes banks and surveillance is carried out by local authorities.

Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Neil McNeilis said the problem of theft from clothes banks is widespread.

Galway ‘Park and Ride’ could become permanent

A park ‘n’ ride scheme from Carnmore into Galway city could become a permanent service if there is public demand.

That’s according to the Chief Executive of Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle.

The pilot scheme will begin at 7.20 next Monday morning, May 13th.

Motorists will be able to park cars at the airport carpark in Carnmore and avail of a bus transfer to Forster Street in the city.

Buses will depart every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes at offpeak times throughout the day, at a cost of 2 euro per journey.
