HIQA records non-compliance issues at Ballinderry Nursing Home

The Health Information and Quality Authority has published the findings of an unannounced inspection at Ballinderry Nursing Home in Kilconnell in Ballinasloe
The private facility had 46 residents on the date of March inspections which aimed to monitor ongoing compliance with regulations and standards.
At the time of inspection, 20 of the 46 residents were deemed maximum dependency.
On the first two days, inspectors found a number of areas of non-compliance where immediate action was required.
This included inadequate care arrangements for residents at risk of falls and also identified that some residents were at risk of choking as sufficient precautions had not been implemented around meal times.
Poor practices were also recorded in medication administration and a lack of support for some very dependant residents.
Inspectors were also concerned about staffing levels and skill mix, and the provision of staff training.
They were so gravely concerned at the number of immediate actions required that they returned to the centre a week later (Mar 22).
Another subsequent inspection found that while there continued to be a substantial amount of work to be completed to bring the centre into compliance, sufficient progress had been made over the weekend to mitigate the immediate risk to residents.
The provider responded to the inspection report last month (Apr 18) and has stated that many action items are complete with many others to be completed by the end of this month (May).
Some action items are listed for June such as the last session of infection control training.

Galway has a population of young people which is more than twice the national average.
According to information gathered by the Central Statistics Office, Galway’s population of 20 to 24 year olds is more than twice the national average.
The number of 25-34 year olds in Galway is also more than the norm nationally, with the two main colleges thought to be the main reason.
However immigration in Galway is much higher than in other areas at 19.4 percent, compared to the national average of 12 percent.

A city councillor is encouraging people to donate goods directly to charity shops.
It follows allegations of thefts from clothes banks in Galway and across the country in recent months.
However, cameras are in place at some clothes banks and surveillance is carried out by local authorities.
Speaking on Galway Talks, Councillor Neil McNeilis said the problem of theft from clothes banks is widespread.

A park ‘n’ ride scheme from Carnmore into Galway city could become a permanent service if there is public demand.
That’s according to the Chief Executive of Galway Chamber of Commerce, Michael Coyle.
The pilot scheme will begin at 7.20 next Monday morning, May 13th.
Motorists will be able to park cars at the airport carpark in Carnmore and avail of a bus transfer to Forster Street in the city.
Buses will depart every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes at offpeak times throughout the day, at a cost of 2 euro per journey.
