Date Published: 04-Apr-2012
A coroner has recommended that Gardaí be given full training in creating road blocks following an inquest into the death of a Carraroe woman.
A verdict of unlawful killing has been returned in the inquest into the death of 33 year old Delia Flaherty who was killed when a drunk driver crashed into her.
It happened on the M6 motorway outside Moate, Westmeath on June 28th last year.
A seperate inquest hearing in Offaly earlier heard that the other driver, Helen Gonoude, of Killeigh, Offaly was two-and-a-half times over the legal alcohol limit at the time.
The sixty-six year-old Offaly woman was seen driving east-bound on the west-bound motorway by a council worker, who tried to stop her, but she drove around him.
Gardai also made an attempt to block the Offaly woman, but she drove onto the hard shoulder to avoid their roadblock.
The Irish Times reports that the jury returned a verdict of unlawful killing, and recommended that all gardai be given full training in creating road blocks.
