MAN JAILED FOR ABUSE OF GALWAY HOSPITAL STAFF
Date Published: 04-Feb-2009
A man who made obscene sexual comments to nurses and doctors at the A&E Department at UHG, received a three-month prison sentence at Galway District Court today.
25 year old Trevor Folan, of 270 Castlepark, Ballybane, remained abusive, insulting and threatening to several nurses and doctors while being treated over a two-hour period at hospital on January 27, 2007.
Garda Cathal Rodgers said Folan was lying on the road outside Bodkins Bar in Merlin Park earlier that night.
He was complaining of neck pain and was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Garda Cathal Rodgers told the court that he and Sergeant Senan Wall had to stay in the hospital for two hours in case Folan tried to assault medical staff.
Inspector Pat McHugh said the level of verbal abuse directed at nurses and doctors at the hospital was disgraceful.
Garda Rodgers agreed and said he overheard Folan threatening to kill a nurse by slitting her throat and made lewd comments at other female staff.
Folan kept shaking his head while Garda Rodgers was giving his evidence and told Judge Mary Fahy he had no recollection of his hospital stay.
He pleaded guilty to breaching the peace at the hospital and to being drunk in public.
The judge said these were the worst facts she had ever heard during her 15 years on the bench in relation to a breach of the peace charge.
Judge Fahy imposed a three-month sentence on him for breaching the peace and fined him for being drunk
