Date Published: 27-May-2008

It’s hoped a 20 million euro remedial action programme for 39 public water supplies in County Galway will ensure that the water is ‘safe and secure’

The county council announced the plans just hours after Councillor Willie Burke criticised the council’s failure to take a pro-active approach to water safety.

Councillor Burke yesterday warned people living in the county to ‘boil water’ before they drink it

However, he has now been accused of ‘scaremongering’ by a number of councillors in advance of the announcement of this major programme

At last evening’s Council meeting Director of Services Jim Cullen outlined the details of the programme which the council hope to have completed by early 2010.

This follows a report by the EPA which highlights 34 schemes in the county considered to be at a high risk of contamination

Council officials have added a further 5 public schemes which they feel need attention also.

A motion was also passed at the meeting to allow the council borrow 20 million to cover the cost of the works
