Zoom Comedy KARLnival ‘the nearest thing to a live show’
Comedy might not have been regarded as an ‘essential service’ under the Government guidelines for controlling Covid-19, but if ever people needed cheering up, it’s now.
That’s why comedian Karl Spain has invited Rich Hall, Mike Wilmot and Seán Hegarty to join him this Friday night for a session of stand-up, music and banter on the Comedy KARLnival.
It’s being presented by the Róisín Dubh – and it’s all on Zoom, starting at 8pm.
The Limerick funnyman, who’s 20 years in the comedy business this year, laughs as he says, “I celebrated by doing nothing because we’re in lockdown”.
However, once the initial shock of not being able to do live gigs had worn off, Karl took action.
He and a bunch of Irish comedians recently took part in a 24-hour comedy festival that featured participants from across the globe. It got a great reaction and gave him an idea to pivot to Zoom.
“As a comedian, it’s the nearest you can get to a live show, you can see the faces and get a reaction, either with a grid view or focusing on an individual,” he says of the popular app. Audiences, meanwhile get to see the comedians from the comfort of their own living room or garden – for €10.
“All you have to do is go to your couch, get your laptop or iPad and log in. It’s €10 which is a fraction of what you’d be paying to see this kind of line-up in a normal venue,” Karl explains. “Take out the travel costs and babysitting, and then compare the price of drinking at home to what you’d pay for a pint out, and we’re nearly giving it away for free,” he chortles.
