Youthful Galway prove too strong for Kerry
Galway 2-9
Kerry 0-2
By Sarah Gaughran
Galway booked their place in the knockout stages of the Littlewood’s Ireland Division 2 Camogie League on Saturday when they overcame Kerry in John Mitchell’s GAA Grounds in Tralee.
Kerry had some players experienced players in the likes of Patrice Diggin and Jackie Horgan, but they lined out with a mainly youthful outfit, with some girls making their debut.
Galway, who also lined out with a mixture of youth and experience will be happy to see Eva Gillmore back playing after her cruciate ligament injury last year; while Alannah Kelly and Niamh McPeake were also named on the bench.
Galway started brightly and were unlucky not to find the net in the opening two minutes. Chloe Farragher’s shot was blocked on the line by the Kerry full-back, Sara Murphy; while a long free in from Katie Gilchrist hit the crossbar.
Tara Ruttledge pounced on that rebound but her shot also hit the post, with Murphy putting the ball out of play for a 45. Gilchrist pointed the resulting 45m to give Galway the lead, which was doubled in the ninth minute when Sinead Coleman laid off a lovely hand pass to Tegan Canning, who pointed.
Kerry failed to score in the first-half, but they weren’t helped by the loss due to injury of one of their key forwards, Jackie Horgan, in the 10th minute. Canning added another point in the 13th minute in a game in which Patrice Diggin was outstanding for Kerry in their defence, coming out with ball after ball, but Kerry struggled to get the ball past the Galway half-back line throughout the first-half.
