Gardaí are trawling through CCTV footage in an effort to try and identify the assailant who struck another man on the head with a bottle last week close to the NUI Galway campus.

A Garda spokesperson that they were taking a very serious view of what seems to have been a completely unprovoked assault – neither party was known to each other.

“This was a nasty incident in which the victim sustained a serious head injury and we have launched a major investigation into the assault.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have information in relation to this incident to contact us at Galway Garda Station on 091 538000,” said the Garda spokesperson.

Gardaí are asking that if anyone was in the Fisheries Field or NUI Galway campus area between midnight on Friday night and 12.30am on Saturday morning (May 28/29) – and who may have noticed anything suspicious – to make contact with them.

The victim of the assault – a youth in his late teens from the east side of the country – had been walking along O’Shaughnessy Bridge between Fisheries Field and the NUI Galway campus just after midnight when the violent incident took place.

He was struck on the side of the head with a bottle being wielded by his assailant who then ran off through the college campus.

Gardaí have said that the assailant could be in his early 20s and wore a red Arsenal soccer club jersey.

The victim of the assault was later treated for a serious head injury at University Hospital Galway but is understood to have since been released.
