Three young musical groups will give a special performance at the Emily Anderson Concert Hall, NUIG, this Sunday, January 26, as part of The Galway Music Residency’s Apprentice Ensemble Programme.

They are Burren Con Brio, the RFM Trio and the Zephyr Clarinet Trio.

All three have received regular mentoring sessions with Galway’s ensemble in residence, the ConTempo Quartet, as part of a scheme which offers training and performing opportunities to emerging, talented classical music groups.

The young group Burren Con Brio is made up of siblings Shónagh (violin), Mia (viola) and Euan (cello) who study with Coole Music in Gort. All three are members of Coole Music’s Sonic Strings & Youth Orchestra. Shónagh also plays with the Symphonic Waves Orchestra – one of Galway 2020’s main projects.

RFM Trio is a Junior Ensemble comprised of three friends: Rachel Kelly (violin), Fionna McKree (violin) and Mark Kelly (cello). They originally met when they joined Athenry Music School’s Creation Orchestra in 2018. These days they continue to attend the music school several times a week for individual lessons and orchestra rehearsals. The RFM Trio meet and rehearse regularly under the mentorship of their director Katharine Mac Mághnuis.

The third group, whose performance will conclude the concert are Dina Ryan, James Middleton, and Marcella Barz, otherwise known as the Zephyr Clarinet Trio. They joined forces while studying with renowned clarinettist Dr Paul Roe at the Technological University of Dublin. Each of them plays a range of clarinets and all have arranged various music for clarinet trio.
