Yoga teacher stretched with demand for classes
From this week’s Galway City Tribune – A yoga teacher has taken to the parks of Galway to treat people to a bit of free yoga during lockdown.
Dermot Ryan is also on Facebook and Instagram teaching chair yoga, standing yoga, meditation and breathwork in 15-minute classes to help people relax during this stressful period.
“I don’t want to over-extend people. At the minute people are not in that frame of mind with the pandemic to do anything too hard. This is a great way to get a gentle introduction to a simple kind of yoga.”
Normally teaching in Seomra Yoga in the Small Crane, Dermot has accepted that returning to that small studio is a long way off.
So, at the invitation of a residents’ committee, he taught a class in the Fairlands green in Newcastle recently with 25 people turning out to take part.
“It was a one-off and we did our social distancing, but in a way maybe too many people showed up even though we had the permission of the community guard. But in the spirit of the restrictions, I’ve decided against holding it again until the guidelines change,” says Dermot.
“We won’t have another one until June 8 when teams are allowed to go back to training while maintain social distancing. We’ll do it in Salthill Park the next time and see how it goes.”
