World music with an Irish slant from vibrant Aldoc

Global band, Aldoc, make music that jumps from genre to genre with gleeful abandon. They celebrate the release of their debut album From Tallaght to Halle with a show in Campbell’s Tavern, Cloughanover on Saturday, May 17.

The band are led by flutist Alan Doherty and the record was produced by New Zealander Gerry Paul, who plays guitar with Aldoc. The friendship between to two men goes back sixteen years when they met were involved with the sublime trad/Americana act, Gráda.

When Eugene Graham, who’d organised tours for Gráda, passed away in Denmark, Gerry and Alan were asked to play at his funeral. This sad occasion gave the lads pause for thought.

“Myself and Alan were playing in the church and said ‘we should play with each other again’,” says Gerry. “The spark between me and him was a big reason we started Gráda. We both realised we had playing together, so we needed a new project.”

And so Aldoc was born, with recording sessions taking place in Cologne and Wellington. From Tallaght to Halle has a dub reggae flavour one minute; some trad airs the next and is also influenced by some major names in indie music.
