Work is to begin in July on a long-awaited new reservoir in Tonabrucky, which provides water for areas west of the city, including Knocknacarra, Rahoon, Moycullen, and Barna.

It was confirmed today that a contractor will be appointed in the coming weeks, to complete the construction, and work is expected to begin in July.

Once the new reservoir is finished, the current one will be drained and repaired, and both reservoirs will be used simultaneously to serve a population that continues to grow, according to recently published census results.

Galway West TD Sean Kyne says water shortages have been a regular problem for the west of the city, and hopes an end to such issues is in sight.
