WORK TO BEGIN IN APRIL ON REVAMP OF CEANNT STATION

The announcement of a 1 million euro investment in Ceannt Station marks a significant shift in the facility’s future.

That’s according to Galway West Labour Deputy Derek Nolan who says Ceannt Station was ignored by the last government, who he claims saw private investment as the only option.

The funding is part of an overall investment of 3.7 million euro in the city’s transport infrastructure announced by Minister for Public and Commuter Transport Alan Kelly today.

As part of phase one, 590 thousand will go towards improvements at the bus, rail and taxi interchange at Ceannt Station.

A further 100 thousand will be used in phase two for design work on the provision of a glass and steel concourse with seated waiting area, retail units, vending area and a new office for bus inspectors.

300 thousand will also go towards upgrading pedestrian facilities along 175 metres of roadway from Ceannt Station to Galway Coach Station.

Deputy Nolan says the station has been allowed to become run down over the last number of years and is not the attractive transport hub it should be
