Work on the long-awaited upgrade of the N59 Moycullen approach road is set to begin at the start of December.

The €3.5 million project – which has been the subject of campaigns by locals for several decades – has been awarded to Wills Bros Civil Engineering, which has previously carried out works on the N59 at Derrylea.

Construction work – which involves the realignment of the road from Clydagh (including Clydagh Bridge) into Moycullen – will begin on December 1.

Local Fine Gael TD Seán Kyne said: “It must be acknowledged that there will be traffic disruption for the duration of the improvement works, but I’m hopeful that the disruption will be minimised by a traffic management plan.

“These essential improvement works have been sought by residents and locals over several decades and will greatly improve road safety for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, residents and visitors alike,” said Deputy Kyne.

The project comprises of 1.2km of improvement works which commence near the Kylebroghlan Road and ties into the existing road at a location approximately 300m east of the Clydagh Bridge. The works also include the installation of cycle lanes, footpaths and lighting.

The project also involves full pavement construction including alterations and widening of existing carriageways, access aprons, footpaths, kerbing; excavation of the existing road; excavation of land adjacent to the existing road; replacement of the Clydagh Bridge; culvert and drainage works; diversion and protection of assets of authorities, utilities and service providers; erection of signage and the application of road markings; erection of street lighting; traffic management; landscape, environmental and mitigation works; access and accommodation works.

The contractors have also previously built the 20km M6 motorway between Ballinasloe and Athlone, as well as 20km on the M18 Gort to Crusheen motorway.
