Work on the construction of a new car park at University Hospital Galway has come to a halt after asbestos was discovered.
The Health Service Executive says there is no risk to patients, staff or visitors at the hospital.
The contractor working on the new car park at the Newcastle site advised the HSE that minor amounts of asbestos were identified in some routine soil samples.
The level or concentration of asbestos is currently being analysed by a specialist laboratory.
The results of the lab tests will define how the materials are dealt with.
In the meantime, work has been stopped and the contractor will engage with the HSE, Health and Safety Authority and City Council.
