Applications are now being accepted for the annual Marie Mullen Bursary for female theatre artists working in Ireland in the fields of design, directing and dramaturgy.

Named after actor and Druid Theatre co-founder Marie Mullen, the award, which is run by Druid, is intended to address the historic imbalance of female representation in theatre and to support the professional development of women in the field.

It’s open to female designers, directors and dramaturgs who have a proven commitment to Irish theatre.

This is its third year. Last year’s winner, costume designer Clíodhna Hallissey from Letterfrack, describes it as “an important stepping stone in my career, one I would highly encourage others to take”.

Winning it was “a unique experience that has given me the chance to work with a ground-breaking company and designers that I admire, in a warm and encouraging environment”.

Again this year, the award will provide a female theatre artist with the physical resources, time and mentoring to support their work – something that would be helpful in the current climate.

Actress Marie Mullen will be involved in mentoring the person chosen.

“I look forward to welcoming the 2020 recipient on board and to working with and supporting many more women in theatre,” she says.
