TWO decades after he ran onto the pitch at the Oosterpark Stadion in Groningen in the UEFA Cup with Galway United, Stephen Lally is just one game away from making a return to European football.

The former United midfielder is the current manager of the Galway League women’s side which faces Raheny of Dublin in the final of the FAI Umbro Senior Cup in Dalymount Park on Sunday (kick-off 3pm), with a place in the UEFAChampions League qualifiers next season awaiting the winners.

The Dublin side go into the game as marginal favourites, especially given the fact it is effectively a ‘home’ game for the north Dublin side, while they are also a senior club — Lally’s charges are a collection of intermediate players from various Galway clubs.

Raheny also boast the talented Olivia O’Toole,who has scored more than 50 goals for the senior international side, but the Galway side have plenty of talent in their own ranks.

U-19 international Kara Mullins has hit seven goals in the four games the Galway League side have played on the way to the final, while nine of the 11who started the semi final against Wilton of Cork have international experience at some level.
