Woman slits wrists and throat at courthouse

THERE were dramatic scenes in Galway District Court on Wednesday afternoon when a woman attempted to slit her wrists and her throat while waiting to come before the court on a number of charges.

Shortly after court proceedings recommenced in the afternoon, there was some commotion at the back of the courtroom where the 26-yearold woman was sitting. She was accompanied by a man, believed to be her social worker, who attempted to calm her down, but the woman became extremely distressed and started to scream.

Judge Mary Fahy rose from her bench and members of the public were evacuated from the courtroom while gardai attempted to bring the situation under control.
