WOMAN REMANDED IN CUSTODY FOR CITY BROTHEL
Date Published: 21-Feb-2012
A 34-year-old Romanian woman has been remanded in continuing custody charged with operating a brothel in Galway city.
34 year old Monica Ciuciu, with a rental address at Mary Street, Galway, appeared before Galway District Court.
Monica Ciuciu was arrested along with a 28-year-old Romanian man when Gardai raided the apartment on Sunday, February 12th last.
Inspector Brendan Carroll objected to bail, citing concerns over the woman’s identity and her current address.
Defence solicitor, Ronan Murphy said his client did not own a passport and she had travelled to Ireland using a Romanian National Identity Card, which the Gardaí now had in their possession.
Judge Mary Fahy wondered how someone could travel without a passport.
She remanded Ciuciu in custody for one week and asked the inspector to make enquiries in the meantime about the validity of the identity card.
Judge Fahy said she wanted more information about Ciuciu’s financial circumstances before granting free legal aid.
