Galway West
Woman power in Galway West
Galway West hasn’t elected a woman to represent the constituency in almost 20 years – now it’s on the verge of voting in two.
It was 1997 when Galway West was last represented by a woman – Fianna Fáil’s Maire Geoghegan Quinn.
But now the constituency is poised to elect two female TDs, Independent Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael’s Hildegarde Naughton.
The duo are not home and hosed yet but it is looking increasingly likely that Connolly will overtake Sinn Féin senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh on transfers, while Naughton is expected to hold off her party running mate, John O’Mahony to take a second FG seat.
It would be the first time FG has ever re-elected two TDs in Galway West – on every other occasion the party entered an election with two in this constituency, they returned with just one.
The 8th count is underway
