Woman loses front teeth in fall on uneven Shop Street cobbles

Two women required medical attention after tripping on Galway’s crooked cobbled pedestrian streets this week.

One woman in her 80s damaged her cheekbone after falling on the uneven surface at the top of Shop Street. Another woman in her 60s, broke three front teeth after falling on a loose cobble further down the street.

Both women visited their doctors afterwards and in one case an ambulance was called. They were in flat shoes, and the falls occurred during the day.

Labour Party city councillor Niall McNelis, who is familiar with both women, said these latest falls highlight the urgent need to resurface the city’s pedestrian streets.

“They were really badly shook after the falls. One hurt her cheekbone and the other broke three teeth. They weren’t in high heels and it wasn’t at night after a few drinks.

“These are two women just going about their business on Shop Street and they tripped on the surface. These are just two that I know personally, but I’m aware of other falls in the pedestrian area,” he said.
